1. Overview & Seamless Merchant Payment Processing

The Gravity Forms + Clover Integration Premium Add-on connects your WordPress forms directly to the Clover Payment Gateway. Accept credit card payments securely for product orders, service invoices, deposits, and charitable donations without redirecting customers to third-party hosted checkout pages.

  • Direct On-Site Processing: Accept major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover) seamlessly.
  • Secure Card Tokenization: Complies with PCI-DSS guidelines by ensuring raw card data never touches your server.
  • Clover Dashboard Synchronization: All web transactions appear immediately in your central Clover merchant reports.
  • Digital Email Receipts: Automatically triggers customer email receipts with transaction reference numbers.
  • Conditional Logic Support: Only process credit card payments when specific conditions are selected in your form.

2. Prerequisites & PCI-DSS Security Requirements

To safely process online payments with the Clover Add-on, ensure your system satisfies the following prerequisites:

  • WordPress 5.8 or higher with an active SSL certificate (HTTPS required for all checkout transactions).
  • Gravity Forms 2.5 or higher with a valid license.
  • An active Clover Merchant Account with Ecommerce API access enabled.
  • PHP 7.4 or higher with cURL and JSON extensions enabled.

3. Generating Clover Ecommerce API Tokens

Before connecting your WordPress site, generate your API credentials in your Clover Merchant Portal:

  1. Log in to your Clover Merchant Dashboard. In the top-right menu, click Settings → View all settings.
    Clover Settings View All Settings

4. Configuring Global Clover Credentials in WordPress

With your Clover API keys generated, link them inside your WordPress dashboard:

  1. In your WordPress Admin Dashboard, navigate to Forms → Settings → Clover Payments.
  2. Select your Environment: choose Sandbox for testing and development, or Production for processing actual live payments.
  3. Paste your Public Key and Private Token into the respective fields.
  4. Click Save Settings to establish the encrypted connection.

5. Configuring a Clover Payment Feed

Each form intended to accept credit cards requires a dedicated Clover feed:

  1. Open your target form and navigate to Settings → Clover Payments. Click Add New.
  2. Transaction Type: Select Products and Services for standard checkouts or deposits.

  3. Payment Amount: Select Form Total to charge the calculated total of all form products, or choose a specific pricing field.

  4. Customer Information: Map form fields to customer First Name, Last Name, and Billing Address.

Important Requirement: Mapping the Email field is required by Clover to issue customer transaction receipts.

  5. Conditional Logic: Check Enable Condition if you offer multiple payment methods (such as Clover vs Check/Invoice) and only want Clover invoked when selected.
  6. Click Save Settings to activate your payment feed.

6. Sandbox Testing & Error Code Reference

Prior to going live, test transactions in Sandbox mode to verify charge capture and email confirmations:

Error Code / Response Cause Resolution
401 Unauthorized Invalid API Key or Token. Check that the keys match your active environment (Sandbox vs Live).
CARD_DECLINED Issuing bank refused authorization or insufficient funds. Prompt the customer to verify card details or try an alternate card.
Missing Billing Email Email field omitted in form mapping. Map a required Email field in Feed Settings.
