Prerequisites & Fast Overview

The Gravity Forms Multi-Currency Premium Add-on enables real-time dynamic currency switching and rate conversion on any WordPress form. Before configuring, ensure your site meets the following requirements:

  • WordPress: Version 5.8 or higher
  • Gravity Forms: Version 2.5 or higher (Basic, Pro, or Elite)
  • PHP Version: PHP 7.4, 8.0, 8.1, 8.2, or 8.3
  • CurrencyLayer Account: Free or paid API Access Key from CurrencyLayer.com for live exchange rates
  • Payment Gateways (Optional): Stripe, PayPal, or PayTrace add-ons for receiving converted payments

1. Connect CurrencyLayer API & Global Settings

To automate dynamic exchange rates across world currencies, link your CurrencyLayer API credentials in global settings:

  1. Log into your account dashboard at CurrencyLayer and copy your unique API Access Key.
  2. In your WordPress admin dashboard, navigate to Forms → Settings → Multi Currency.
  3. Paste your API Access Key into the API Key setting field.
  4. Specify your preferred Rate Update Frequency (e.g. Daily, Hourly) and save your settings.

2. Adding the Currency Selector Field to Your Form

Once global settings are configured, you can embed the currency selector into any form:

  1. Edit your target form via Forms → Edit.
  2. Open the Advanced Fields drawer on the right sidebar and locate Currency Selector.
  3. Drag and drop the field into your form layout, placed above your pricing and total fields.

Click on the field to open Field Settings. You can customize the Field Label, select default active currencies, or activate automatic IP geo-location pre-selection.

3. Managing Currencies & JSON Portability

The add-on offers granular control over which global currencies are displayed to customers. Under the Manage Currencies tab, you can enable or disable specific ISO currency codes, adjust decimal precision, and define custom display symbols.

Additionally, you can export your entire currency table and rate configurations as a clean JSON file, or upload a JSON backup when migrating between staging and production environments.

4. Payment Gateway Handoff (Stripe, PayPal & PayTrace)

When forms include standard Gravity Forms pricing items (Products, Options, Shipping, and Totals), the add-on recalculates the active currency dynamically. During checkout submission, the converted amount and three-letter ISO currency code (such as EUR, GBP, CAD, JPY) are dispatched directly into your connected payment feed.

5. Developer Hooks & Custom Exchange Rate Filters

Developers can filter exchange rates, inject custom markup buffers, or modify available currencies programmatically via WordPress filter hooks.

functions.php — Custom Exchange Rate Buffer
PHP

// Apply a 2.5% foreign exchange safety buffer to all dynamically converted rates
add_filter( 'gform_currency_exchange_rate', function( $rate, $target_currency, $base_currency ) {
    // Add 2.5% safety buffer for international payment processing fees
    if ( 'USD' !== $target_currency ) {
        $rate = $rate * 1.025;
    }
    return round( $rate, 4 );
}, 10, 3 );

6. Frequently Asked Questions & Troubleshooting

How often are live exchange rates refreshed?

Exchange rates are cached locally in WordPress transients according to your configured update frequency (hourly, twice daily, or daily). This ensures maximum frontend form loading speed and prevents depleting your CurrencyLayer API monthly quota.

Can I set fixed custom rates instead of using the API?

Yes. In Forms → Settings → Multi Currency → Manage Currencies, you can manually enter static exchange rates for any individual currency, overriding automated API calls.

Does it support zero-decimal currencies like Japanese Yen (JPY)?

Yes. Standard ISO formatting rules are automatically applied, properly formatting zero-decimal currencies (such as JPY) and standard two-decimal currencies (such as USD, EUR, GBP) without calculation errors.
