Gravity Forms
+ International Address Formats

A country-aware mode for the Gravity Forms Address field: when the visitor picks a country, the order of the address parts, their labels (ZIP code, Postcode, PIN code, Eircode, Prefecture), the required parts, the region list and the postcode check follow that country. Built-in formats for 65 countries, postcodes tidied and checked in the browser and again on your own server, allowed countries per field, the country from the browser language, formatted address merge tags in the postal order, entry screen and export columns. No outside connection.

What does it do?

The Address field's International type shows one layout for every country: street, city, “State / Province / Region”, “ZIP / Postal Code” and country, always in that order and with no postcode check. A visitor in Germany types the postcode after the city, a visitor in Singapore is asked for a city that does not exist on their letters, a visitor in Japan has to reverse the whole address, and a UK postcode typed as “sw1a1aa” is stored as typed. The Gravity Forms International Address Formats add-on makes the field follow the country the visitor picks.

Turn on the country format on any Address field of the International type. When the visitor chooses a country, the parts move into that country's postal order (postcode before the city in much of Europe, postcode first in Japan and China, the region after the city in the United States and Australia), the labels change (ZIP code, Postcode, Postal code, PIN code, Eircode, CAP, CEP; State, Province, County, Prefecture, Emirate; Town / City, Suburb), parts the country does not use are hidden, the parts it needs become required and the others are marked optional. Countries with a fixed list get a region list: US states, Canadian provinces, Australian states, Japanese prefectures, Italian and Spanish provinces, Indian states and more.

The postcode is tidied and checked as the visitor leaves the box (“sw1a1aa” becomes “SW1A 1AA”, “1000001” becomes “100-0001”) with an example of the right format, and the server does the same again on submit, so a value changed in the browser is never stored. Choose the countries visitors can pick, show the country first, pre-select it from the browser language, or keep the standard layout for chosen countries. Use {Address:3:formatted} for a label-ready address in the postal order, plus :oneline, :nocountry and :country_code; the entry screen and {all_fields} can show the formatted address too. Every entry keeps the standard sub-inputs, so exports, feeds and other add-ons keep working. 65 countries are built in; add more with a few lines of JSON. Everything runs on your own server: no outside connection. For Gravity Forms 2.9 and newer.

How does it work?

The add-on keeps the standard Address field and its six inputs. With the country format on, a small script reads the country the visitor picks and moves the inputs into that country's order, changes the labels, hides the parts the country does not use, turns the region box into a list where the country has one, and tidies and checks the postcode with the country's pattern. When the form is submitted, the add-on does the same on the server before anything is saved: it works out the country from the posted value, refuses a country that is not on the field's list, empties parts the country does not use, brings the postcode into the country's format, matches the region to the list, and checks the parts the country requires. The entry stores the usual street, city, region, postcode and country inputs, plus the formatted address and the country code as entry meta for the entry list and the export. The formats are bundled with the add-on, so no address service is called: the add-on makes no outside HTTP request beyond the licence and update checks.
