Gravity Forms
+ Submission Inspector

Find out why a Gravity Forms submission did not send, show or run what you expected. Switch tracing on for one form or any form, for the next few submissions and a time limit, and the add-on records the decisions Gravity Forms actually made: which check marked an entry as spam, which fields failed validation (also when no entry was created), why each notification was sent, blocked by its conditional logic rule by rule, disabled or changed by a plugin callback, which confirmation was chosen and which callback changed it, which feeds ran or were skipped by their condition, and where a submission stopped with a PHP fatal error. Plain-language explanations on the entry and in a filtered list, a dry "Would it fire now?" check that sends nothing and runs nothing, an optional daily spam digest and a WP-CLI command. Field values are never stored: compared values are kept masked, and unmasking is admin-only, per view and logged. Off by default, observe-only, no outside connection.

Submission Inspector

Core Features

Trace one form or any form, for the next 1 to 1,000 submissions and a time limit of up to 30 days; tracing switches itself off
Spam explained: honeypot, anti-spam time check, link detection, captcha, Akismet or the named gform_entry_is_spam callback and its plugin
Validation explained: the failed fields and their messages, also for submissions that created no entry, and the callback that failed a field
Each notification explained: sent, blocked by its conditional logic (rule by rule), disabled, changed or cancelled by a named callback, with its routing result
Confirmation explained: which one was chosen and why, and which callback changed or emptied it
Feeds explained: ran, skipped by their condition (with the rule), switched off, delayed, still queued later, or failed (with a link to Feed Health)
Stopped runs: a submission ended by a PHP fatal error is reported with the step, the callback, the file and the line
"Would it fire now?": a dry check of an entry against today's settings that sends nothing, runs no feed and saves nothing
Field values are never stored: kind, length and a salted fingerprint only; admin-only unmask per view, read from the live entry and logged
Gravity Forms log lines kept per traced entry, masked (Gravity Forms 2.9.26 and newer)
Filtered list, a box on each entry, an optional daily spam digest and wp gf-inspector show / list
Off by default and observe-only: with tracing off nothing is hooked into submissions; retention purge (30 days by default); no outside connection

What does it do?

A visitor says they filled in your form but nobody got the e-mail. A notification that worked last month stays silent for some entries. An entry lands in spam and you do not know which check put it there. Gravity Forms makes a lot of decisions after Submit, and most of them leave no trace you can read. The Gravity Forms Submission Inspector add-on records the decisions Gravity Forms actually made for a submission and explains them in plain language.

Switch tracing on for one form or any form, for the next few submissions and a time limit; it switches itself off. Each traced submission gets an explanation: which spam check marked it (honeypot, the anti-spam time check, link detection, a captcha, Akismet or a named plugin callback), which fields failed validation and with which message, even when no entry was created, why each notification was sent or not (its conditional logic rule by rule, its routing, or the plugin callback that disabled or changed it), which confirmation was chosen and why, which feeds ran, were skipped by their condition or were delayed, and where a submission stopped when a PHP fatal error ended it.

The Would it fire now? button checks an existing entry against the form as it is set up today, without sending an e-mail, running a feed or saving anything. Field values are never stored: a value that a rule compared is kept as its kind, length and a salted fingerprint, so the explanation can say "did not match" without showing it. Only administrators can unmask a value; it is read from the live entry for that one view and every unmask is logged. With tracing off, nothing is hooked into your submissions. For Gravity Forms 2.9 and newer.

How does it work?

While a tracing rule runs, the add-on listens to the decisions Gravity Forms makes during a submission: the spam check, validation, each notification (disabled, conditional logic, routing, sending), the confirmation it chose and the feeds it processed. When a plugin callback changes one of those decisions, the add-on notes its name and the plugin it belongs to, without changing what the callback receives or returns or the order in which callbacks run. When the request ends, the decisions become a trace in the add-on's own table: names, rules and masked values only, never a submitted value, deleted after 30 days by default. A tracing slot is taken with a single atomic database update, so parallel submissions never exceed the number you chose. Unlike configuration checks such as our Form Health add-on, it looks at what really happened to a submission; unlike our Form Speed Profiler it explains decisions rather than timings; Feed Health handles failed feeds and retries, Test Mode handles test runs, and SMTP / Email Tracking shows what happens after an e-mail is handed over. Everything runs on your own server — no outside HTTP request beyond the licence and update checks.

How do I enable this?

1
Install and activate the add-on, then activate your license key in Forms → Settings → Submission Inspector.
2
Open Forms → Submission Inspector, choose a form (or any form), how many submissions to trace and for how long, and press Start tracing.
3
Send the form or wait for the next visitors, then open a trace from the list (or the Submission Inspector box on the entry) to read what Gravity Forms decided and why.
4
Use Would it fire now? on any entry to check today's settings without sending anything; administrators can unmask a single value when they need to see it.
