Print shops, copy and scan services, translators, proofreaders and binders all price by the page — but a form can only ask the customer how many pages they think they sent. The Gravity Forms Upload Page Counter & Print Pricing add-on reads the real page count of every uploaded file on your own server and puts it straight into your pricing.

Turn on Count pages on any File Upload field, with one file or many. PDF files are read by a built-in PHP reader that handles modern PDF 1.5+ files with object streams, files that were edited and saved again, damaged cross-reference tables and encrypted PDFs that open without a password; files that need a password are flagged. Word (DOCX) files give their saved page count, PowerPoint (PPTX) files their slides, and every image is one page (a multi-page TIFF counts its pages).

The count appears beside each file as soon as it is uploaded, with a running total under the field. The total pages and the number of files go into read-only Number fields, so a calculation such as pages × price per page × copies, with colour or black and white and single or double-sided options, prices the order before payment. The server counts again on submit, so the price cannot be changed in the browser. Set a minimum and maximum number of pages with your own message, show a note that blank pages are counted, and choose whether files that cannot be counted are blocked or allowed with a note — never counted as 0 pages. Every file’s count is saved on the entry: a Page count box on the entry screen, {page_count} and {page_count_files} merge tags for notifications and confirmations, and Total pages and Pages per file columns in the entry list and the CSV export. Everything runs on your own server: no outside connection. For Gravity Forms 2.9 and newer.

When a visitor uploads a file, Gravity Forms stores it in the form’s temporary upload folder; the add-on reads that file on your server and sends back only its page count, which is shown beside the file. For a PDF it reads the cross-reference data (classic tables and PDF 1.5+ cross-reference streams), the objects inside object streams and the page tree; when the page tree is inside an encrypted object stream it decrypts it with the empty password if the file opens without one. A DOCX gives the page count saved by the word processor, a PPTX its slides, and images count as one page. When the form is submitted, the add-on counts every file again before Gravity Forms validates and saves the entry, writes the total into the Number field you chose (ignoring any value typed in the browser), checks the minimum and maximum and the files that could not be counted, and stores each file’s count on the entry. Everything happens on your own server — the add-on makes no outside HTTP request beyond the licence and update checks.
